It’s getting to that time of year when many people are starting to think about going away; however, it’s been reported Brits are beginning to ditch a popular destination. It comes as eerie footage has emerged of empty airports at the holiday hotspot, and it’s got a lot of travellers talking.
Videos of such scenes have gone viral on TikTok, with one tourist having shown an airport looking totally empty. Even though we are only approaching the start of the season, he noted the airport is like a “ghost town”, with eerie footage showing just how quiet it is at the travel destination.
It’s not the only country to have been supposedly rejected either. Last year, it was reported Brits are also abandoning five other hotspots.
Speaking about the scenes he witnessed in Turkey, dadhealthandtravel wrote: “I get it’s only March, and the resorts are just starting to get busy ahead of the season starting, but I have NEVER seen Antalya Airport this quiet. Through check-in, passport control and security in under five minutes.
“For anyone curious, it’s hot, and getting hotter by the day! Currently around 23 to 24 degrees mid-afternoon.”
The video has been viewed thosands of times, and dozens quickly commented. One said: “It’s so expensive.”
Another added: “That place is a rip-off.” A third replied: “We left from Antalya Airport last week and it was the quietest I’d ever seen it.”
Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “This is true. When we arrived two days ago it was like a ghost town.” One more also simply wrote: “It’s too expensive.”
However, others admitted they’ve visited recently and a different picture was painted. One person noted: “It’s not the season yet, so most flights are not flying.”
Another chimed in with: “We arrived on Monday and there was many people.” One more also added: “Flew back from Antalya yesterday. It did seem quiet, but had the best week out there.”
Why has Turkey become expensive?
Over the past few years, many people have reported that Turkey has become more expensive. There are thought to be a few reasons for this.
A significant aspect is the extreme inflation and the quick devaluation of the Turkish Lira. In recent years, it’s said to have rapidly declined in value.
High operating costs, soaring demand in tourist spots and heavy taxes on imports have also erased its former reputation as a “cheap” destination. As a result of instability, businesses frequently increase prices to cover anticipated future costs, a practice that has caused a massive surge in prices.
Not to mention, high taxes are applied to imported goods, electronics and alcohol, making these significantly more expensive than in other countries. There are some cheaper areas to visit though.
While tourist areas in major cities such as Istanbul are now expensive, budget-friendly options, such as eating in local neighbourhoods or visiting off-season, are still available. There are ways to try and work around it.
