British mum, 50, drowns in front of husband and son, 16, during Corfu holiday | World | News

The 50-year-old mother was swimming alongside her husband at Roda Beach on Wednesday when bad weather left the pair battling waves to return to the shore.

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the incident, some suggesting that strong currents amid poor weather were to blame, while others claim the couple were dragged towards a rocky section.

Corfu Press reports the mother was pulled “unconscious from [the] water.”

The father came away with minor injuries after being rescued, reports Birmingham Live.

An ambulance rushed her to a private clinic, where she was pronounced dead before her body was transferred to Corfu General Hospital.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Greece and are in touch with the local authorities.”

A post-mortem is expected to be performed so a pathologist can work out whether she was killed by drowning or whether she sustained a fatal blow from the rocks.

It comes as a pair of swimmers were swept out to sea in Cornwall.

This happened on Saturday, July 5, at round 5.50pm at Crantock Beach in Cornwall, when the swimmers ignored warning from the lifeguard to return to the shore.

Two PA announcements were made to the swimmers asking them to leave the water due to dangerous conditions, one a few moments after the other.

One of the swimmers then returned to shore but was not followed by the other two.

The pair still swimming, a man and a woman, then appeared to signal for help before being swept out to sea.

Lifeguards were quick to jump to action when the swimmers disappeared from view, but the conditions of the waters made them difficult to find.

Ultimately, the two were rescued, with the woman had sustained multiple cuts, bruises, and abrasions, and had also swallowed a lot of water.
