Bridget Jones mini-marathon on television this weekend | Films | Entertainment
Those looking for movies to binge watch this weekend are in for a treat as a Bridget Jones mini-marathon is all set to dominate the nation’s airwaves.
For fans of the popular rom-com franchise based on author Helen Fielding’s novels — two films from the Bridget Jones catalogue will be broadcast on the tele this weekend.
Those hoping to catch a telecast of the feel-good films that defined a generation are in luck. The second instalment in the franchise, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, will be airing on BBC One tonight, November 15, at 11.10pm.
For those who haven’t had their fill of the queen of madcap dating sagas, Bridget Jones’s Baby will air on BBC One on Sunday, November 16, at 10.35pm.
The Bridget Jones franchise centres on Bridget (surprise, surprise), a clumsy woman — with ever-changing careers — navigating the obstacles of singlehood as she flits from one dating disaster to another. Her two love interests, Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver, remain constant presences throughout the beloved series.
While Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, directed by Beeban Kidron, scored a measly 27 per cent on the critics’ Tomatometer, its follow-up, Bridget Jones’s Baby, helmed by Sharon Maguire, fared better with a 78 per cent critics approval rating on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
Both films received generally positive feedback from audiences, with one fan saying about Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason: “This is a very cosy, feel-good film. One for watching from the sofa while wrapped in a blanket and sipping a hot chocolate. The comedy timing is just perfect. Highly recommended in all its lovable awkwardness.”
Another audience review of the second instalment added: “After watching the first film for the first time I couldn’t wait and had to watch the sequel. Another cracking film for Bridget Jones and I can’t wait to see Bridget Jones’s Baby.”
While one glowing review shared by a fan reads: “It does much justice to the first, giving the same charm, hilarious sense of humour and witty remarks that made me love it in the first place, but with a fresh and original feel. I enjoyed every minute of it!”
Critics on the other hand, were impressed with the franchise’s third instalment, Bridget Jones’s Baby, with one declaring: “Funny (nay, hilarious), modern, intelligent, and good-willed, Bridget Jones’s Baby proves that sequels aren’t always a bad idea.”
Another reviewer said of the rom-com: “Bridget Jones’s Baby is a hilariously satisfying revisit to a franchise that pays equal parts homage and parody to the rom-com genre.”
While yet another impressed critic wrote: “Bridget Jones’s Baby, the third, much-troubled installment of the Bridget Jones series, is a delight. Go see it.”
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason will be broadcast on BBC One tonight, November 15, at 11.10pm, while Bridget Jones’s Baby will air on BBC One on Sunday, November 16, at 10.35pm.
