Boy, 11, pepper-sprayed by cops at migrant hotel protest | World | News
The Met Police pepper sprayed a child during anti-migrant protests in Canary Wharf, London. Officers were assaulted by a protester inside a shopping centre and the individual was arrested by officers who used PAVA spray. The boy was accidentally sprayed as well given the “density of the crowds in the area”, the Met Police said.
This comes after footage online has seen disorder break out in a shopping centre in Canary Wharf, close to the sight of the Britannia Hotel which has been earmarked as a potential asylum accommodation site. The Metropolitan Police have issued a section 60AA order to quell disorder in the Isle of Dogs.
A witness on X said: “Disgusting scenes in Canary Wharf with Police pepper spraying children. Absolutely appalling behaviour from an out of control police force. Deliberately targeting children is outrageous.”
The Met Police have responded with the following statement: “Officers witnessed an assault by a protester on a member of the public inside Canary Wharf shopping centre.
“The suspect was immediately arrested by officers who used PAVA spray.
“We are aware other protesters and members of the public may have been temporarily affected by the use of PAVA given the density of the crowds in the area.”
Earlier, Met Police shared on X: ” We have been facilitating peaceful anti-asylum protest on the Isle of Dogs this afternoon. Protesters, including some masked, moved into the Canary Wharf shopping centre where a small group became aggressive towards police. One arrest made. Further officers deployed to assist. The protesters have now dispersed. We remain in the area on patrol and to reassure local residents and businesses.”
