Amazon Prime Video has added one of the “weirdest” films of the previous decade, and fans have described it as “bizarre”. Amazon Prime Video regularly drops new titles for its subscribers to enjoy, and a recent addition might have you scratching your head and wondering what on earth is going on, even leaving you disturbed. It has made several lists pointing out the strangest movies of the 2010s, and left many fans confused about what it meant and what it was even about. However, many have hailed it as a stellar watch.
Amazon Prime Video has added the 2018 sci-fi horror flick Annihilation to its platform, becoming available for subscribers in the UK to watch on Monday, August 25. The film was met with mixed reviews from audiences when it first came out, but it still seems to intrigue curious movie fans. Starring Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac and Tessa Thompson, among many other familiar faces, the film has a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 88%, with an audience score of 67%.
The film follows a cellular biologist (Portman) and a group of other scientists and doctors who are sent to enter an anomalous zone formed when a meteor hits Earth. Upon entering, they come across sinister things that have creeped out some audience members.
The film is included in Screen Rant’s list of the weirdest movie moments of the 2010s. Meanwhile, viewers took to the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes to share their thoughts on it.
One person wrote: “Stunning and beautiful yet bizarre. One of the best sci-fi I’ve seen.” Another said: “Everything about this is incredible and will take you multiple watches to fully grasp everything that’s given to you. Each rewatch leaving you more unsettled the more you realize.”
Not everyone was impressed by Annihilation. One review fumed: “Do not waste one second of your life watching this crappy movie I beg you. I know you’ve heard this before, but if I could give it negative Stars, I would have!”
Over on Reddit, one user described Annihilation as “the most disturbing mainstream movie I’ve watched as an adult”. They wrote: “The atmosphere was so depressing and weird. There were moments where my skin crawled. It was never scary like movies like Smile or gory like Evil Dead Rise, but it was just soul-crashing. My mood went down after watching it.”
