Beautiful island praised as ‘Hawaii of Europe’ boasts 25C in September | Travel News | Travel

A European island located off the western coast of Africa is the perfect escape for Brits looking for a last-minute beach holiday in September. Despite being located just four hours away from the UK, this beachgoers’ haven is ideal for a late summer holiday thanks to its mild September weather, which, according to Holiday Weather, averages around 23C.

With temperatures that rarely dip below 20C, even in January, this destination in Portugal has earned a reputation as the “Hawaii of Europe” – and seeing its natural beauty, it’s easy to see the connection. From impressive cliffs, lush mountains and dramatic ocean views to subtropical gardens, the landscape in Madeira is nothing short of spectacular.

Located 500km off the coast of North West Africa and 450km north of the Canary Islands, Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal made up of four islands – Madeira, Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagens.

Discussing the average temperatures in September, travel website Madeira Lovers stated: “The weather is very pleasant, with little precipitation and plenty of sunshine. In fact, you can expect very few rainy spells on an average of one day per month.

“You’re making a good choice for experiencing outdoor activities, hiking and beaches, while avoiding the heat and crowds of summer.”

Madeira is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering breathtaking experiences like hiking to the peak of Pico do Arieiro to catch a stunning sunrise or relaxing in the natural Porto Moniz Swimming Pools, surrounded by nature’s beauty.

The island’s culinary scene is as exciting as its landscapes, and, like the rest of Portugal, it boasts exquisite local cuisine.

Food lovers can try local specialities such as Bolo de Caco, a soft, warm bread; Milho Frito, a dish of crispy fried cornmeal; and Espetada, a classic Madeiran dish of grilled beef skewers.

One of the island’s signature drinks is poncha, a traditional cocktail made with aguardiente de cana, honey, sugar, and a splash of orange or lemon juice – an ideal refreshment after a day of exploration.

And, of course, no visit would be complete without trying the island’s renowned Madeira wine, a rich and unique local vintage.
