Beats teases long-awaited earbuds that could upstage the AirPods Pro 2

Apple’s AirPods are the go-to wireless earbuds of choice for iPhone owners (and probably a fair few Android users too), so it’s easy to forget another Apple-owned brand also makes rival headphones that are often just as good as the famous white buds, and sometimes even better.

Beats, bought by Apple way back in 2014, has a wide range of in-ear audio buds at varying price points and for different use cases, but one of its most popular and well-received products in years is the Beats Fit Pro. Released back in 2021, the small earphones have a design for active and sport use, with a wing tip to tuck the buds more securely into your ears so they don’t fall out.

Four years is a long time for Beats not to update the Fit Pro (though it’s a win in my book, these things don’t need to be updated every year, including phones). That might be why we are getting a sequel, which Beats has teased with a video on its YouTube channel.

Unlike when the brand updated its over-ear hook Powerbeats Pro with last year’s excellent Powerbeats Pro 2, we aren’t getting Beats Fit Pro 2. Instead, the company has confirmed the Powerbeats Fit name along with a snappy 16 second teaser video featuring NFL stars Saquon Barkley, Justin Jefferson and Jayden Daniels wearing the new earbuds.

The design looks to have changed a little with a more rounded barrel look to the body that mirrors the design of the Powerbeats Pro 2. The wing tip remains, which, along with the ‘Fit’ branding makes it pretty clear these will replace the Beats Fit Pro.

Those originals had excellent battery life and noise cancellation and transparency modes comparable in quality to the AirPods Pro 2. In some instances the sound quality even outperformed the famous white buds, which retail for £219, £10 less than the AirPods.

There’s no word on what Beats has improved, but such an upgrade will surely focus on better fit – though many people have praised the Fit Pro’s comfort, I found them frustrating to wear, hurting my ears after only an hour or so. I’m hoping the new set fare better for me, if I get to test them out.

Beats would also do well to add wireless charging to the case, a common feature in pricey wireless earbuds these days that the Fit Pro sorely lacked. The case was also quite large, so hopefully some shrinkage has occurred. Improved audio and noise cancellation will also likely be touted, and the Powerbeats Fit should also have several Apple-only features such as Personalised Spatial Audio and head tracking.

With no release date set we now have to play the waiting game, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be long until the Powerbeats Fit land in stores.
