Arsenal player ratings vs Brentford: Three 5/10s underwhelm in much-changed Gunners side | Football | Sport
Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw with Brentford at the Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta rang the changes ahead of next week’s Champions League trip to Real Madrid.
Thomas Partey looked to have banked three points for the Gunners, who were deserving of their lead, but fox in the box Yoane Wissa turned passed David Raya on the swivel to share the spoils. There were only six starting line-up survivors from the famous win over Real, and although Arteta introduced the big guns in the second half, the hosts were unable to regain the lead.
Here, Express Sport takes you through how each Arsenal player performed on the day…
Arsenal player ratings vs Brentford (4-3-3)
David Raya: 7
Distribution was fantastic and he rolled the ball out to kick-start the counter-attack which led to Arsenal‘s opener. But he was all over the place when Wissa equalised.
Thomas Partey: 7 (Timber, 69)
Came up with a powerful strike to finish off a second-half counter after having a relatively quiet gane.
William Saliba: 8
Dealt with the pace of Kevin Schade and dominated their one-on-one strength battle. Brilliant on the ball as he repeatedly carried it out from the back, rarely making a mistake, and pinged a great ball into Gabriel Martinelli to set up a big chance. But he lost a back-post header leading up to Wissa’s equaliser which proved costly.
Jakub Kiwior: 5
A few rungs below centre-back partner Saliba in terms of physicality and quality.
Kieran Tierney: 7 (Lewis-Skelly, 62)
Looked to have scored his first goal in almost two years with a first-half header, but he was denied by a VAR offside call. Good tackle denied Bryan Mbeumo in a dangerous position.
Oleksandr Zinchenko: 7 (Odegaard, 62)
A couple of nice flashes from him in midfield. Found Ethan Nwaneri with a nice reverse pass.
Jorginho: 6
Nobody does ‘steady but unspectacular’ quite like the Italian international. Came off after a nasty fall late in the game, when Arteta had already used all of his subs.
Declan Rice: 7 (Merino, 76)
Seemed a bit frustrated until his first-rate contribution in the 61st minute. Received the roll-out from Raya, led the break and fed Partey at the perfect time.
Ethan Nwaneri: 7 (Saka, 62)
Corner deliveries were dangerous. Whipped in a brilliant ball which Tierney headed home, but it was disallowed for offside.
Leandro Trossard: 5
Didn’t offer enough up front. Tested Flekken with a sharp shot from distance but also missed a completely free header at the near post.
Gabriel Martinelli: 6
Largely kept quiet by the Brentford defence.
SUBS
Martin Odegaard: 6
A valiant attempt to pull some strings, but to no avail.
Myles Lewis-Skelly: 6
Brought his usual energy to the game.
Bukayo Saka: 5
Got a massive chance when he pinched the ball off Flekken and rounded him late on, but couldn’t make it count.
Jurrien Timber: 6
A quiet cameo.
Mikel Merino: N/A
A late addition.
