Apple could launch the iPhone 17e next month – is this what it will look like?
Apple has finally confirmed it is hosting an event for media and influencer on March 4 in New York and London. Although the tech giant is tight-lipped about what it’s for, when invitations are sent out in this way, the company always launches new hardware.
Rumour has it Apple is about to introduce new lower-cost (for Apple!) devices, including a base iPad and all-new MacBook that could come in bright colours and cost well under $1,000.
But rumours also suggest Apple will also use this event to announce the iPhone 17e, its entry-level iPhone successor to 2025’s iPhone 16e. The 16e replaced the iPhone SE range, with UK prices starting from £599.
That’s not exactly cheap, but it gives buyers a less pricey way to get a brand new iPhone if they can’t afford the £799 iPhone 17. The 16e cut back on features, using the same screen design with notch as the iPhone 14, with only one rear camera and no MagSafe support.
If we are about to see an upgraded iPhone 17e, it could well have just been uncovered by YouTuber and perennial Apple-botherer Jon Prosser. In one of his latest videos, Prosser has put together renders of what he says is the iPhone 17e, revealing some of the changes he believes Apple has made.
In the short video, Prosser says the iPhone 17e will run on a “slightly binned” A19 chip, the same as the iPhone 17, gain MagSafe, and potentially have the Dynamic Island feature instead of old-style notch.
You’ll have to take Prosser’s video with a rather large grain of salt, though. First of all, in this video published on February 12, he says Apple will launch the iPhone 17e “next week”. That time has come and gone, with no sign of any announcement (Apple confirmed its March 4 event on February 16).
Prosser also shows off a 17e design with the Dynamic Island, but waits right until the end of the video to say he’s not actually sure about that feature, and that Apple might just keep the notch of the 16e.
Elsewhere, the single camera on the back is said to remain at 48MP but with better low light performance, while the phone could come in black and white, with potential for a lavender colour, though even Prosser admits that might not happen but that he heard it was at least tested internally at Apple.
The screen is said to be 6.1-inches, with Apple sticking with 60Hz refresh rate. Given the iPhone 17 finally got the boost to Apple’s 120Hz ProMotion, the iPhone 17e would be the only iPhone available without ProMotion – as the iPhone 16e currently is.
If you want to see if the iPhone 17e exists, the money is on us all finding out on March 4.
