An irate Ally McCoist has lambasted Celtic and Rangers hooligans for the “diabolical” incidents that tarnished Sunday’s explosive encounter at Ibrox. The 63-year-old could barely contain his anger as he chastised those who trespassed onto the pitch, and was left seething after witnessing images of Celtic fans defacing the Broomloan Stand with graffiti mocking the Ibrox disaster.
McCoist, who attended the match with his children, maintained that the atmosphere was enjoyable until it soured after Martin O’Neill’s side won the penalty shootout. Speaking to talkSPORT, the Rangers legend stated: “I went to the game, I didn’t see anything before or during the game. I saw the mob coming in from the Broomloan Stand, I’m sitting saying to myself, ‘just please stay off the pitch man, just stay off the pitch’.
“They are running about. You hope it doesn’t happen, but you know it’s going to happen, you just know it’s going to happen. They come on from the other end, it is an absolute embarrassment. It was cringe.” Referencing pictures of Rangers supporters in balaclavas, McCoist added: “I was going to say, that new Marvel movie looks hopeless, doesn’t it?”
McCoist did not mince his words after seeing fans clashing. The mockery of the 66 fans who died in 1971 incensed the Gers icon, who disclosed another disgusting incident that allegedly took place inside Ibrox – a young girl being hit by a bottle.
He also cautioned the troublemakers that their conduct will likely compel authorities to ban away supporters for the foreseeable future.
He added: “It was diabolical. We met one of the young lads who was up the west enclosure of the stand. He told me, we were in for a pint after it, there was a young girl there, and he said she got hit with a bottle. An 18 or 19-year-old girl got hit with a bottle.
“What chance have we got? I’ve been sent, and by the way they are as bad as each other before we get any further, the mess of the Broomloan Stand. They are writing phrases about the Ibrox disaster, 66 dead and all that, what is it with these people?”

“It’s just pure bitterness and sickness of the mind. The game itself was poor, but the atmosphere was actually good. We want the fans into the game, but I will tell you right now, they have put that to bed. That will not happen.
“It’s just turned. The vast majority of people want Hearts to win that league, and with some justification. It was pathetic yesterday. Shocking.”
Celtic legend and former captain Scott Brown told talkSPORT: “Those days of running on the park, fighting, scrapping on the pitch… 90 minutes, shout and swear, say what you want to the lads. But after that, that’s it, done and dusted.
“It is ugly for Scottish football. We never want that to happen, we want there to be a good showcase. A lot of people down in England are watching that and the way they look at us, that’s what they’re going to remember.
“The passion is unbelievable, everyone knows the passion is unbelievable. But that part of the scene, it’s a select part of the crowd that always want to spoil it for everybody else.”
