Bryson DeChambeau‘s latest bid for a first ever Green Jacket ended miserably as he missed the Masters cut on Friday night. The American needed a huge second round after a triple bogey on hole 11 on Thursday led him to a first-round 76. He looked set to sneak into the weekend after four birdies improved his overall score to three-under until a disaster on the 18th cost him. A second triple bogey in two days, after needing two shots to get out of the bunker before seeing his third roll off the green, was his undoing. The two-time major champion crashes out with a score of six-over, missing the cut by two shots.

DeChambeau was one of the pre-tournament favourites at Augusta National but suffered a weekend to forget in Georgia. Yet he was not the only big name who missed the cut. Six former champions also missed out: Fred Couples (1992), Jose Maria Olazabal (1994 and 1999), Vijay Singh (2000), Zach Johnson (2007), Bubba Watson (2012 and 2014) and Englishman Danny Willett (2016).

Singh, Olazabal and Couples missing out was perhaps no surprise with the youngest of the trio is now 60 years of age and the oldest is 66. But there were some younger headline-makers who also missed out, with JJ Spaun, the reigning US Open champion, going out on +5.

Ryder Cup winner Nicolai Hojgaard finished on six-over, with Bob MacIntyre and Cameron Smith both on +7. Jon Rahm, the 2023 winner, was left sweating but snuck through on four-over par as did Brian Harman and Rasmus Hojgaard.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy goes into Saturday in four control with a six-shot lead over American duo Patrick Reed and Sam Burns thanks to a magnificent round of 65. That was the best round of the day as he birdied six of the last seven holes. McIlroy’s Thursday and Friday playing partner, US Amateur champion Mason Howell, was among those to miss the cut, however, on +9.

Elsewhere, McIlroy’s pals Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood (both -5) are among those hoping to bridge the gap to the world No.2 while fellow Englishman Justin Rose is on the same score after two rounds. McIlroy and Rose went to a play-off last year before the Northern Irishman completed the career Grand Slam to end his 11-year wait for a major.

McIlroy’s six-shot lead this year is the largest after 36 holes in the history of The Masters. Only six times in history has a player had a lead of five shots after the first two rounds, and five of those ended up wearing the Green Jacket, including Jordan Spieth in 2015 and Scottie Scheffler in 2022.
