Film enthusiasts have been left deeply unsettled following the release of the trailer for a brand-new horror film inspired by a 4chan post.

The trailer dropped recently and has already amassed over 18million views on YouTube, reports the Mirror.

In the teaser, furniture store owner Clark (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) discovers a backroom in his shop that he never previously knew existed.

He sets about exploring the area with his friends and confides in his therapist about the peculiar rooms, which begin to multiply and defy the laws of physics.

Clark and the others attempt to film what they encounter to prove the strange rooms’ existence, however, matters take a sinister turn when it becomes apparent that something dangerous may be lurking within this space.

Numerous viewers shared their reactions in the comments section beneath the trailer after being left thoroughly rattled.

One person posted: “I’m going to have nightmares for weeks, it’s gna be awesome [sic].”

A second shared similar sentiments: “Bro I will have many nightmares of this but it will be worth it [sic].”

While a third posted: “The fact that they are not only keeping the VHS aesthetic, but also the soundtrack from the webseries tells me this is going to be pure peak.”

Backrooms is a psychological, sci-fi horror series based on the semi-anthological web series of the same name by Kane Parsons, who wrote, directed and composed the original.

Parsons returns to helm the Backrooms film, which features an impressive ensemble, including the aforementioned Oscar-nominee Ejiofor, The Worst Person in the World actress Renate Reinsve, The Morning Show’s Mark Duplass, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms star Finn Bennett, Shrinking’s Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia from Victorious.

Backrooms itself drew inspiration from an unsettling 2019 post on the notorious forum 4chan on its paranormal-themed board /x/.

The post contained a photograph of an ominous, vacant space adorned in garish pastel yellow wallpaper, beige carpets and with fluorescent lighting.

Others subsequently shared comparable images with a liminal space aesthetic, giving rise to the mythology of The Backrooms.

The Backrooms are impossibly vast rooms that can be accessed by “no-clipping out of” reality.

No-clipping itself is a phrase used in video games, whereby players employ a cheat mode to pass through solid objects such as walls, ceilings and floors by disabling the clipping function.

According to a post on Reddit, the original poster requested people to share comparable images in a thread of “liminal spaces” – empty or abandoned locations that appear eerie and even surreal.

One user responded to the post, writing: “If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in.

“God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you.”

Much like the mythology surrounding Slender Man, which first emerged online, Backrooms is yet another horror concept that has made the leap from internet forums to the big screen.

Backrooms will be released in cinemas on May 29
