Solingen stabbings: Police swarm German city centre after incident | World | News

On the evening of August 23, 2024, a mass stabbing took place in Solingen, in which three people were killed and eight were injured.

Following the attack, a 24-hour manhunt ensued, which ended with police arresting a suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian refugee. The man is also suspected of being a member of Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the attack.

In September 2025, the attacker, after having confessed to his crimes at the beginning of the trial, received a life sentence to be followed by preventive detention.

His asylum application had been rejected in 2023, and although he was ordered to be deported to Bulgaria, where he had previously applied for asylum, authorities were unable to locate him, during which time he remained in Germany.
