Isak back in Liverpool training as Slot confirms big Man City boost | Football | Sport
Alexander Isak is set to rejoin full team training at Liverpool today, head coach Arne Slot has revealed. The striker has been absent since December 20, when he suffered a broken leg following a challenge from Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven during the Reds’ 2-1 victory in north London. The £125million forward had opened the scoring after coming off the bench in the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, only to be caught late by Van de Ven in the act of finding the net.
Isak subsequently underwent surgery to address the injury, and after almost four months out of action, he will take a significant step forward in his recovery on Thursday when Liverpool‘s international players return to the AXA Training Centre. This raises the prospect of the former Newcastle United frontman being in the frame for a place on the bench when the Reds travel to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Saturday lunchtime.
“I think Alex is in a really good place because Sweden qualified for the World Cup yesterday evening and apart from that he’s going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow,” Slot told Liverpoolfc.com.
“If you’ve worked so hard for three, four months or something like that and then to return to team training, that’s for everyone very nice. So Alex is, in that sense, in a good place.
“Of course it’s only his first session, after three or four months [out], with the team but it’s good to have him back because we all know who we signed and we’ve signed an incredible striker.
“So to have him again in a team that’s usually generating quite a lot chances – and maybe not immediately from the first moment that he can start – but to have him back for the last two months is, I think, very helpful for us.”
Slot has additionally confirmed that Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa should be fit for the showdown with City.
Salah sat out the 2-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion prior to the international break with a muscle injury, while fellow forward Chiesa withdrew from Italy’s squad.
Nevertheless, goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains unavailable and Slot revealed that right-back Jeremie Frimpong will undergo a scan today (Wednesday) after he was forced off during the Netherlands’ draw with Ecuador on Tuesday night.
