Donald Trump dubbed Tiger Woods an “amazing guy” who has “pain” after the 50-year-old was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on Friday. The PGA Tour pro left his SUV on its side in Jupiter, Florida, last week when he tried to overtake a tow truck on a narrow road.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers believed that Woods showed signs of impairment, with a police report which is claimed to have been seen by TMZ citing how his eyes were “bloodshot and glassy,” while his pupils were “extremely dilated.” While law enforcement carried out a field sobriety test on Woods, who blew 0.00 on a breathalyser, he refused to provide a urine sample for further examination. As a result, he was handed charges of DUI, destruction of property, and failing to submit a lawful test.

He was subsequently booked into the Martin County Jail, spending eight hours behind bars – a mandatory time period under Florida state statute for those arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Having been released, he will face his charges in court next month.

And now, Trump has spoken about Woods’ health issues while describing the athlete as an “amazing guy.” Speaking with the NY Post in a telephone interview, the President of the United States said: “He tested negative for alcohol, as you know, and he is under a tremendous physical pressure from his various ailments, you know, the back and the leg.

“He lives a life of pain. He has a lot of pain. He’s an amazing guy. He’s an amazing athlete. He does have pain. He doesn’t have an alcohol problem, but he does have pain.”

In the aftermath of Friday’s crash, Trump also described Woods as a “very close friend.” It comes as the police report which surfaced in the news on Tuesday claimed that law enforcement found two white pills with the markings ‘M367′ on them in Woods’ pant pocket during a search of him during his arrest.

The code on the medication revealed it to be hydrocodone – an opiate which is used to treat severe pain. While Woods said that he had taken the medication prescribed to him earlier in the morning, he explained that he had not used any alcohol or illegal substances.

The resident of Florida also explained to officers that he was distracted by his mobile phone and the radio in his car before his crash, as per the report. Speaking with the media at the Jupiter Island Police Department on Friday, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, explained the police’s findings from their investigation.

He said: “Just before 2pm today, the Jupiter Island Police Department, which is where we currently are, received a call of a rollover crash about two and a half miles from where we are. The Jupiter Island Police Department responded out there and found a pickup truck pulling a pressure cleaner and a Land Rover which was rolled over on the driver’s door. The investigation started, and initially, right off the top, it did appear that the driver of the Land Rover might be impaired.

“And at that point, the chief of Jupiter Island Police Department called me from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and asked for our assistance. It wasn’t that the Jupiter Island Police Department isn’t fully capable of doing these types of investigations, but quite frankly, the Sheriff’s Office has a lot more repetitions in these traffic crashes and these types of investigations.”

He added: “The individual driving that Land Rover was able to crawl out of the passenger door of the car and was identified to be Mr Tiger Woods. Our DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr Woods did exemplify signs of impairment.

“They did several tests on him – of course he did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had, we did take that into account. But they did do some in-depth roadside tests, and when it was determined, he was placed under arrest and taken to the Martin County Jail.

“At the Martin County Jail, and even on scene, we really weren’t suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case, and that proved to be true at the jail. Mr Woods did a breathalyser test, blew triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused. And so, he’s been charged with DUI, with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

“In the crash, no one was injured. Mr Woods did not seem to be injured at all, and the other gentleman was not injured. This happened a few hours ago, so I’ve given you the information that I have right here, right now.”
