Jannik Sinner makes ‘incredible’ admission after Carlos Alcaraz change | Tennis | Sport

Jannik Sinner has admitted his staggering win streak in Masters 1,000 tournaments is “incredible” after he beat Alexander Zverev in the Miami Open semi-finals. The Italian defeated his German opponent 6-3, 7-6 to also further extend his record of straight sets won to 32 and he will meet Jiri Lehecka in Sunday’s final.

After claiming his 16th successive win, Sinner said: “It has been an incredible swing. I’ve been trying to play as many matches as possible and I couldn’t do any better. Today was a very tough encounter. He played some incredible tennis, but I was serving very well, especially in the end and in the crucial moments. Standing here again, in the final, means very, very much to me.”

Winning in Florida will see Sinner complete the Sunshine Double after triumphing at Indian Wells earlier this month. Alongside that aim, the 24-year-old will also be looking to further increase his ranking points in the live ATP list with Friday’s victory seeing him to move on to 12,050 points, which will be the most he has ever achieved.

Even if Sinner does win against Lehecka, Carlos Alcaraz will remain above him and thus keep his world No1 title but the former is closing in on the Spaniard. Ahead of next month’s Monte Carlo Masters, Sinner, who has no points to defend with the 2025 edition taking place when he was suspended, could be just 1,190 points behind his rival.

There will be a further 1,000 ranking points available in the Spanish capital with defending champion Alcaraz looking to fight off Sinner’s challenge for his spot. The former ended the 2025 season on top of the rankings and a strong start to this year has seen him return to the summit.

Winning the Australian Open in January, which saw him take Rafael Nadal‘s record of being the youngest male player to win all four major slams, saw Alcaraz start the season in impressive form. He kept that up the following month by winning the Qatar Open, but the last month has been far from straightforward for Alcaraz.

He was beaten by Daniel Medvedev in the semi-finals of Indian Wells, a tournament that Sinner went on to win. And earlier this week in Miami, he was knocked out at the round of 32 stage by American Sebastian Korda.
