A European destination dubbed the ‘best-kept secret’ has been revealed, and it’s just a three hour flight from the UK.

A study that looked at over 90 coastal destinations across Europe analysed information such as the reliability of summer weather, popularity, beach quality, affordability, and the number of visitors in comparison to its local population. This allowed Solmar Villas to put together a top ten ranking of the best and most-secret holiday destinations for Brits who want to go off the beaten track.

The number one spot was shared by two cities: Almeria in Spain and Calabria in Italy, however, for budget travellers the former might be a better option. In May, flights to Almeria can be found for as little as £20 one way, making it an excellent choice for an adventure on a budget.

Sharon Bradbury, General Manager at Solmar Villas said:”“It’s no surprise to me that Almería performed so well in this ranking. It’s known for its dramatic desert landscape, and is the only desert in mainland Europe. In the same instance, it’s coastal, has beautiful protected natural parks, and over 300 days of sunshine per year, making it one of the sunniest places in Europe.”

She added: “What’s particularly interesting is that many lesser-known destinations actually outperformed some of the Mediterranean’s most famous tourist hotspots. For example, Ibiza ranked 92nd overall, Mykonos came in at 95th, and Dubrovnik placed 97th in the rankings.

“While these destinations are famous for a reason and have plenty to offer, travellers looking to avoid high prices and heavy crowds may want to consider some of the higher-ranking locations on this list as a cheaper alternative away from the tourist hustle and bustle.”

Sitting on Spain’s sunny southeastern coast, Almeria is a historic harbour town full of Moorish architecture, museums, and long sandy beaches.

One of its most iconic sights is the Alcazaba, a former fortress that sits on a hill overlooking the sea on one side and the city on the other. Climb to the top for incredible views, as well as learning about Almeria’s interesting Moorish history.

Visit the vast Catedral de Almeria with its ornate interiors, and the historic Mercado Central de Almeria, as famous for its beautiful 19th-century architecture as its array of fresh, local produce.

A short walk from the city centre is the long sandy Playa de San Miguel, and on sunny days you’ll see people relaxing on the golden sands or taking a dip in the clear blue seas. Walk or cycle along the long flat promenade and you’ll find plenty of cafes, bars, and local restaurants with outdoor tables that overlook the sea. At one end, you’ll find Almeria’s port, where you’ll see boats regularly heading out to Morocco. If you don’t fancy such an adventurous journey, there are also sunset cruises and other short trips exploring the coast.

Almeria is also close to one of Europe’s only real deserts and it has often been used as a filming location. It has stood in for the old west in Spaghetti Westerns, as well as being the site for filming Lawrence of Arabia and Conan the Barbarian. Take a tour of the Tabernas Desert and you’ll feel like you’re making your own epic journey through the stunning scenery.

Because Almeria is less of a tourist hotspot than other Spanish cities, prices tend to be more reasonable. Pints can be found for about €3.50, around £3, and many restaurants offer a menu del dia at lunchtime which can be as little as €15 for a three course meal with a drink.
