Russia breaches NATO airspace twice and hits plant as emergency meeting called | World | News

Two Russian drones breached NATO airspace, with one hitting the chimney of a power station in Estonia and another crashing into the Latvian territory. Estonian media outlet EER said a drone that entered Estonian territory from Russian airspace hit a chimney at the Auvere power station in Ida-Viru County early on Wednesday morning.

No one was injured in the incident, and the power infrastructure was not damaged, they also added. Meanwhile, another incident was reported in Lativa where “on the night of March 25 at 3:43 am, a drone hit the chimney of the Auvere power plant. No one was injured in the accident,” a spokesperson for the Internal Security Service (ISS/KAPO) said.

In Estonia, local media said the Prosecutor’s Office said the drone was not intentionally directed towards the Auvere power plant or towards Estonia generally. “According to current information, the drone was not directed at Estonia. Initial actions are currently being taken, the investigation will clarify the more specific circumstances,” Astri Asi said in a press release.

Justice Minister Liisa-Ly Pakosta, however, told ERR on Wednesday morning that the government is to convene for an emergency session concerning a “security incident”.

The Estonian Information System Authority (RIA) later announced that technical issues were affecting the app on March 25, ERR also said, and were being addressed. RIA also acknowledged that a warning was sent via the app about a potential drone threat in respect of northeastern Estonia.

The wreckage of the drone entering Latvian airspace was found in the Kraslava region, near the border with Belarus, the government said. “No civilians were injured and no damage was caused to civilian infrastructure,” it also said, addin that “the circumstances of the incident are being investigated”.

Reports of Russian drones entering the Baltic airspace came after Putin started a wave of drone strikes across Ukraine in what in believed to be the biggest aerial assault within a 24-hour period since the war began. 948 drones were launched at cities nationwide, with more than 400 of those fired in an unusual daytime blitz yesterday (March 24).

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said a “large number of drones” entered Ukrainian airspace from the north, appearing to move in coordinated columns.

He added: “The geography of the strikes during the daytime was broader than at night… It can be said this was one of the largest attacks within a 24-hour period.” The Russian drones targeted the cities of Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsia, and Ternopil in western Ukraine. In Vinnytsia, officials said one person died and 11 were wounded

Regional chief Svitlana Onyshchuk said two people were killed in Ivano-Frankivsk, while four others – including a six-year-old child – were injured. Buildings across the city, including a maternity hospital, were damaged.
