Stefanos Tsitsipas in Miami Open meltdown after embarrassing new low | Tennis | Sport
Former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas told Miami Open organisers they should be ‘ashamed’ over the lighting in his match, as he fell to his heaviest ever defeat. The Greek star could not live with Arthur Fils as he fell to a 6-0, 6-1 defeat.
Tsitsipas recently fell to his lowest ranking in eight years after dropping outside of the top 50, but had shown signs of improvement with a victory over Alex de Minaur earlier in the tournament. The 27-year-old could only last 55 minutes against his French opponent, however, as he committed 26 unforced errors.
It was the lights on court that frustrated Tsitsipas most, however, with chair umpire Greg Allensworth being on the receiving end of an angry outburst during the short clash. The ex-Australian and French Open finalist was not too impressed with the official.
“You should be ashamed of this,” said Tsitsipas. “Have you ever seen me miss every shot after the serve like I’m doing today?
“It doesn’t happen. I cannot see the ball. I don’t know how he sees the ball.”
Fils certainly had no problems in Miami as he advanced to the fourth round in South Florida. The Frenchman claimed 89 per cent of his first serve points and saved the two break points he faced.
The 21-year-old has found good form since returning from a back injury that ended his 2025 season prematurely. Fils has reached the final in Doha and made the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, and now enters the last-16 in Miami, where he will face Valentin Vacherot.
“That’s one of the best matches I’ve ever played,” Fils said following his win. “I have played some great matches before, but this level was insane. I don’t know what to say, but very happy with the performance.”
“I am fully back,” Fils added. “It feels like I never left. It feels very, very good.”
“I think the process has been good. Besides the loss today, I think I’m still in the right way,” he said.
“Some things in previous tournaments that I just didn’t feel comfortable, I think in this tournament, I started to feel better and better.”
