UK to get Netflix rival streaming service this week – the price may su
The UK is getting a brand new streaming service this week, with HBO Max set to launch on Thursday March 26. Though much of the available content was already watchable before, the new app means you can now watch content from HBO, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, DC Studios and Max Originals all in one place.
The service debuts on British shores to rival Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, boasting Oscar-winning blockbusters One Battle After Another and Sinners, plus the entire Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises.
You’ll also be able to enjoy buzzy new series including The Pitt, Rooster and DTF St. Louis, as well as modern classics such as Succession, Friends, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones and Euphoria. Down the line, it’ll also be home to the new rebooted Harry Potter TV series.
If you’re looking for something new to watch that can;t be found on any of the streaming services you currently subscribe to, the good news is that HBO Max is cheaper than its competitors.
You can get the HBO Max basic with ads plan for £4.99 per month, £1 cheaper than the cheapest Netflix and Disney+ plans. However, you will probably want to pay at least £5.99 for the Standard With Ads plan, as this includes 30 downloads per month for offline use as well as access to Warner Bros. theatrical releases – two things the basic plan lacks.
There are also Standard and Premium tiers for £9.99 and £14.99 per month, which removes ads, opens up simultaneous access across more devices and provides better resolution playback if you have an HD or 4K TV.
For sports fans, TNT Sport, the home of the Champions League, is moving homes from Discovery+ to HBO Max on Thursday. That means you’ll have to sign into the new app to access TNT Sports if you currently subscribe.
If you want to sign up, a monthly plan for TNT Sports costs £30.99, or from £36.98 if you bundle it with HBO Max.
Saver plans are also available, which are cheaper per month if you commit to a 12-month minimum term, which includes a 12-month minimum term cost of £30.99 per month for HBO Max Standard with TNT Sports – a pretty good deal.
HBO Max will be available from Thursday as a downloadable app on your smart TV as well as streaming devices such as the Amazon Fire TV Stick. You can also tune in on your smartphone or tablet by installing the app for iOS or Android.
