Andy Murray finally gets Carlos Alcaraz wish 13 months later thanks to Miami Open | Tennis | Sport

It’s taken just over a year but Andy Murray has finally been granted his wish about Carlos Alcaraz. The former tennis player retired from the sport in 2024 but has maintained a keen interest in the goings-on ever since.

Murray, much like most tennis fans, has been full of praise for Carlos Alcaraz throughout the Spaniard’s rise to the top. Alcaraz has already completed the Career Slam, becoming the youngest player to do so.

Already boasting two titles from each of the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, the Australian Open was the missing piece of the Grand Slam puzzle for Alcaraz. Defeating Novak Djokovic in the final earlier this year, Alcaraz completed the set and wrote his name in the history books.

While the ongoing Miami Open is only his third tournament since the first Slam of 2026, Alcaraz has remained in good nick. The 22-year-old won the Qatar Open immediately after the Australian Open, before progressing through to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last week.

Alcaraz will get his Miami Open campaign up and running against Joao Fonseca, which for Murray will be a match that’s been a long time coming. Because 13 months ago, the Scot took to social media to express his excitement for future match-ups between the two talented tennis stars.

He posted on X in February 2025: “Can’t wait for the first Fonseca vs Alcaraz match [love heart and fire emoji].”

Fonseca edged a clash with Fabian Marozsan in round one, defeating the Hungarian 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. The teen is being tipped for big things in the future, with one legendary coach even suggesting he could challenge world No.1 Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner for Grand Slam titles.

On Fonseca, Brad Gilbert said: “This is an easy one, the hype is real. He is top-three material. The hard part is that he needs to be a little more consistent and improve his willingness to play defence, but what I saw from this tournament (Indian Wells) is that he really pushed Sinner.

“He could have easily won that first set and he was dropping 137mph at night, I did not realise he could serve that big. I think he works hard. I think he really has a great shot to jump in the mix with Sinner and Alcaraz.

“I think he can add a little more to his game and what’s attractive about him is that he’s only 19, there is a lot more to grow in his game. I think he would be awesome to coach. Outside of Sinner and Alcaraz, if I could choose one guy, I would take him.”
