Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea Women player dies aged 35 as tributes pour in | Football | Sport
Amy Carr, a former Arsenal and Chelsea Women’s player, tragically passed away at the age of 35. Carr was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2015 and has sadly died. In 2024, the inspirational Carr completed the Dublin Marathon to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research, bringing in £28,718 to support crucial research into brain tumours.
Brain Tumour Research announced her passing on social media. A statement read: “We are deeply saddened to hear that Amy Carr has died following her battle with a brain tumour, aged 35. A former England youth international who played for clubs including Chelsea F.C. Women, Arsenal W.F.C. and Reading F.C. Women, Amy demonstrated remarkable strength and determination after being diagnosed with a high-grade brain tumour in 2015.
“In 2024, she ran the Dublin Marathon to raise money for Brain Tumour Research. In total, Amy raised an extraordinary £28,718 to help fund vital research into brain tumours.”
“Our thoughts are with Amy’s family, friends and everyone who loved her. We are so grateful for the awareness she raised and the difference she made.”
Tributes have flooded in for the former footballer, who fought the condition for 11 years. One user wrote: “Very sad to learn of this. May Amy’s holy soul rest in the sleep of peace.”
Carr’s condition was discovered in 2015 after fainting at the sight of a spider. She underwent an MRI and found out about the tumour the ‘size of a golf ball’.
She underwent surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy to treat the grade four, golf ball-sized astrocytoma, and believed she had recovered until recently. But after experiencing blurred vision and slurred speech shortly after an annual check-up in 2024 doctors discovered the tumour had returned.
In August last year, Carr was informed she was terminally ill and heartbreakingly given a prognosis of just six to nine months left to live.
The former goalkeeper represented England 16 times at youth level, up to the Under-19s, and played for Arsenal, Chelsea and Reading.
