Cameron Norrie puts Carlos Alcaraz on notice as world No. 1 wary of Brit | Tennis | Sport

Cameron Norrie will renew his rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells on Thursday night, and there’s a lot on the line. Norrie is currently locked in battle with Jack Draper for the British No. 1 ranking, while Alcaraz is on an unbeaten, 15-match winning streak so far in 2026. Norrie, who lifted the trophy here in 2021, also has bragging rights over Alcaraz after shocking the world No. 1 in their last meeting at the Paris Masters in October.

Two-time former champion Alcaraz has made it no secret that he’s out for revenge. But Norrie has always been a tough opponent for the Spanish superstar, and the No. 27 seed in Indian Wells has warned Alcaraz that he’s feeling better than ever on the tennis court.

After beating Rinky Hijikata to reach his fourth quarter-final in Indian Wells this decade, the British No. 2 told Sky Sports: “This week I’ve felt I’ve played some of the best tennis of my life, but let’s just keep enjoying it, keep going. It’s nice to get the wins like that but, more importantly, I’m having so much fun on the court.

“It was a match where obviously I was the favourite on paper and I just felt really confident all week. I’ve been moving well, the ball has been feeling so good off the racket and I’m relaxed before the match so I can actually enjoy the match. It was a match where the pressure was a bit on me but I’ve been playing so well I just wanted to keep enjoying it and making it tough.”

It’s no surprise Norrie feels that way. He’s already caused a big upset against No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur and is through to the last eight without dropping a set. Now, he wants to be the first player to beat Alcaraz in 2026.

Norrie has been something of a bogey player for the seven-time Grand Slam champion. Alcaraz still holds a winning 5-3 record against the Brit, but he always finds it difficult facing Norrie – and he didn’t want to explain why when probed after setting up their Indian Wells clash.

“I would love to answer that question, to be honest, but probably Cam is going to watch this,” Alcaraz smiled. “But, you know, I would say lefties [are] always tricky to play against, I would say. Just the way he can change the, you know, I’m gonna say the height of the ball. He has a really flat backhand and really topspin forehand. So you can be a little bit confused sometimes with how it’s gonna come, the ball, to you.

“He’s a gladiator. You know, he’s a real fighter, fighting every ball, every game, every set. So it’s really difficult to, you know, when you’re facing someone like never give up any point or any ball.”

Alcaraz looked relentless in his fourth-round match against Casper Ruud, beating the No. 13 seed 6-1 7-6(2). His performance rating in the first set was 9.7, and he hopes to bring the same intensity against Norrie.

The world No. 1 added: “I think I was at a really high level of tennis for me in both sets. Just really happy to know that I just did the goals that I set on myself at the beginning of the match. Hopefully playing this kind of level or the same level in the next round. Really difficult one against Cam, great battles I have against him. The last one I just lost against him, so I just really wanted to take the revenge.”
