Ikea announces huge new change for famous meatballs

IKEA has announced a major change in its food in stores. The furniture retailer, which is a primary destination for customers worldwide when moving houses or giving their homes a revamp, is also loved for its delicious food options in-store. Customers can purchase a variety of goods to prepare at home or enjoy meals and treats at their Swedish Restaurant, Swedish Bistro, and Swedish Cafe.

Despite already offering such a wide range of affordable prices, the retailer has expanded its menu with another tasty addition.

IKEA has introduced its first Meatball Sub at just 95p. The sandwich, which launched on National Meatball Day (March 9), will be available nationwide in stores until April 30, 2026.

The sub features IKEA’s iconic meatballs in a soft bread bun, with pickled gherkins and lingonberry jam.

Karen Hughes, IKEA UK and Ireland food manager, said: “We know how much our customers love our meatballs, and after celebrating their 40th birthday in December, we could think of no better way to reinvent them for the modern palette this National Meatball Day.”

According to The Grocer, the launch of the Meatball Sub comes as Google searches for “sandwiches” have increased by 10% over the past year.

Not only that, but “meatball marinara” has also garnered particular interest, with searches increasing by 80%. Swedish meatball searches increased by 30%, while “Ikea food” searches surged by 110%.

Ms Hughes added: “By bringing together bold Swedish flavours – savoury meatballs, lingonberry and gherkins – in a sub, we’re making it easier to enjoy a taste of Sweden on the go, at a price tag that stays true to Ikea.

The new Meatball Sub is available in IKEA stores nationwide.
