For those seeking a stress-free getaway without the complications of navigating public transport or the expense of taxi fares, these destinations are ideal choices. Whilst on holiday, one of the most rewarding experiences is simply strolling around and discovering your surroundings.
Instead of cramming your itinerary with numerous activities, museums and galleries whilst dashing considerable distances between them, it’s considerably more pleasant to select a holiday destination that’s easily navigable on foot. If you fancy a break where everything is within easy reach, then you’re in luck.

Braw Scottish Tours examined the walking distance between the five main attractions in 30 of Europe’s most popular cities; from this, the research identified the most walkable destinations that are ideal for a relaxed holiday.
10. Kraków, Poland
Kraków, the historic capital of Poland, has a walking distance of 6.9km, taking visitors through its historic sites like Wawel Castle and Main Market Square. You’ll take roughly 8,970 steps over 1.38 hours and get a thorough look at what this city has to offer.
9. Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt requires 6.6km of walking to explore its main attractions, such as Römerberg and the Städel Museum. This equals about 8,580 steps and 1.32 hours, to discover the city’s medieval and contemporary architecture.
8. Birmingham, UK
The only UK city on the list is Birmingham at 6.3km. With sites like the Bullring and Grand Central and the Jewellery Quarter, you can experience the best of this city in roughly 8,190 steps and 1.26 hours.
7. Copenhagen, Denmark
Trendy Copenhagen’s attractions are spread over 6.1km. This includes the gorgeous Tivoli Gardens and Nyhavn, totalling 7,930 steps and 1.22 hours.

6. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam can be explored over 5.9km, leading visitors past the Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House. This will take about 7,670 steps and 1.18 hours, and the stroll will highlight the city’s abundant artistic legacy.
5. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague’s route spans 5.8km, leading walkers through its historic heart to landmarks such as Prague Castle and Charles Bridge. To take in the sights, it will require approximately 7,540 steps and 1.16 hours.
4. Dublin, Republic of Ireland
Dublin’s trail extends 4.9km, taking in attractions like the Guinness Storehouse and Trinity College, equating to about 6,370 steps and 0.98 hours. It offers a blend of cultural and historical sites within a manageable distance.

3. Hamburg, Germany
The delightful city of Hamburg demands a bit more exertion, with a walking distance of 4.4km to reach attractions like Miniatur Wunderland and the Elbphilharmonie. In total, tourists can anticipate walking 5,720 steps over 0.88 hours.
2. Milan, Italy
Milan is hot on its heels at 3.8km, presenting visitors with a concentrated array of landmarks such as the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. To explore the renowned city of fashion, it’ll take roughly 4,940 steps and 0.76 hours on foot, making it perfect for those who favour shorter strolls.
1. Istanbul, Turkey
Taking the top spot is Istanbul with a total walking distance of just 2.5km. This leads tourists past major attractions like Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar within a compact area. To explore, it’ll only take about 3,250 steps and half an hour of walking.
However, the UK FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) advises against all travel to parts of Turkey because of a heightened risk of terrorism at the moment.
