The incredible new £392m skyscraper that will be Africa’s tallest building | World | News
An incredible new skyscraper will soon be towering over a major city’s skyline and become the tallest building in Africa. The continent’s tallest tower at the moment is the Iconic Tower in The New Capital, Egypt, which is 1,292 ft, (393.8 m) tall, but Egypt’s supertall skyscraper is about to have its title taken away as Ivory Coast’s Tour F, also known as F Tower, is expected to be completed this year, and once it is, it will reach a high 1,381 ft (421 metres) – 89 ft taller.
The major project will see the skyscraper used as an office building that will unit various government agencies that are currently spread out across the city. Plans for the building actually date back to the 1970s, where it was part of an urban development plan, which includes the five exisiting towers to the administrative complex.
Though it was only in 2016 that a new planning phase began, and in 2021, construction work actually kicked off. The Ivorian Ministry of Construction, Housing and Urban Planning is developing the project in collaboration with local construction company PFO Africa, which is on the development and financing.
Designed by Lebanese-Ivorian architect Pierre Fakhoury, the slender, multifaceted tower comprises a central podium with reception areas, restaurants, meeting rooms, and a large lecture hall; 76 office floors; and various elevators, including a panoramic elevator.
The total construction cost is around 450 million euros, which is equivalent to over £392 million.
Abidjan is one of the most populous cities in Africa and a crucial economic hub in the Ivory Coast. The city is already renowned for its modern skyline in the plateau district of Abidjan
However, the development will mark a significant shift in the Ivory Coast’s economy. By strengthening connectivity among the Ivory Coast’s Government departments, the country’s largest city can be mapped as a premier West African business hub.
