Tucked away on the Llŷn Peninsula, a 30-mile expanse dubbed “The Land’s End of Wales” and designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lies a charming little cove that escapes most visitors’ attention. Situated just beyond Ty-hen is the most picture-perfect location for a coastal day out, far removed from the crowds of Wales‘ busier tourist destinations. The west-facing inlet of presents a magical setting, encircled by verdant headlands that form a secluded haven.

The beach enjoys considerable shelter, providing an ideal venue for swimming in exceptionally peaceful waters. Alternatively, an early morning stroll whilst the shoreline remains tranquil, followed by a leisurely day on the sand, creates the sensation of discovering your own private paradise.

The northern section of Porth Iago beach proves popular amongst anglers seeking to fish for bass from the rock pools. Others opt for canoeing or kayaking, frequently spotted on the waters of this concealed bay.

Reaching the location requires passing through an operational farm with a chargeable car park, typically costing approximately £5 to £6, whilst the path down to the sand can be quite steep. Dogs are welcome on the beach, and toilet facilities are available at the farm for visitors requiring them.

Campsite

Taking its name from the beach, Porth Iago Campsite provides campers the opportunity to set up with views across one of Britain’s most breathtaking beaches and enjoy a stay surrounded by the tranquillity of the coastline. Operating as a family-run establishment since its inception in 1918, it occupies working farmland that remains active to this day.

The campsite embraces minimalism, allowing the natural splendour of its surroundings to speak for itself. All types of campers are welcomed, whether arriving with tents, campervans or motorhomes, with abundant space provided to ensure privacy across the grounds.

Given high demand, the site reaches capacity quickly, operating exclusively on a pre-booking system – early reservations significantly improve your chances of securing a pitch.

One visitor shared on TripAdvisor: “This campsite is an absolute gem for anyone who loves being by the sea. The views are breathtaking – you’re surrounded by the ocean on all sides, with a private beach of soft white sand and dramatic cliffs just a short walk away. Watching the sun set over the water from the campsite is pure magic.”

However, some guests have highlighted the “basic” amenities available. Two toilets are provided alongside two separate shower facilities, designated for men and women respectively, which campers report cost £1 per use.

Nearby beaches

Should you fancy exploring beyond the immediate vicinity, numerous alternative, slightly larger and more accessible beaches await for days spent sunbathing, swimming or enjoying watersports. Traeth Porthor beach lies nearby and offers a stunning coastline, safeguarded by the National Trust.

Notably, the beach functions as a voluntary “no smoking” area, aligned with ASH Wales, which seeks to “safeguard nature, wildlife and community wellbeing”. Be aware that the car park is situated 300 metres from the beach, along a gravel path, making accessibility limited.

Adjacent to Porth Largo beach on the right sits another beach, Traeth Penllech, which provides an extensive sandy expanse that holidaymakers are likening to “Cornwall’s best” beaches. One recent visitor wrote: “I love Traeth Penllech (Penllech beach) and decided it’s finally time I posted a review.

“It’s a beautiful, rugged stretch of coastline which feels quite different from the beaches on the south side of the Llyn Peninsula. There are lovely long stretches of light-coloured soft sand with imposing cliffs above. When the tide is out you can walk quite a way.”
