And while the city might be considered a more unusual destination it boasts filter coffees for less than £1.25, while beer in the city is “among some of the cheapest in Europe”. A glass of wine meanwhile will cost travellers £1.93 in Lisbon, compared to around £9.86 in destinations like Oslo in Norway.

Speaking on Channel 4’s Bargain Holiday Secrets, A Place in the Sun presenter Jasmine Harman said: “It really pays to do your research. The capital city of Portugal has all the charm you could ask for but it’s one of the cheapest city breaks out there though it may not be your ideal destination.”

Lisbon also offers Brits a chance to get some winter sun if they head off on holiday over the cooler months. The capital city has average temperatures between 17C and 19C in March.

In the summer temperatures can reach up to 28C in Lisbon. The city also stays dry for a majority of the year, with most of the rainfall coming between November and February.

The castle sits at the highest point in the city and is set among Lisbon’s more traditional neighborhoods. Elsewhere the Terreiro do Paco is the city’s iconic square, having been rebuilt in 1755 following a devastating earthquake.

According to Visit Lisbon, the square offers a “very pleasant walk” along the river Tagus in the late afternoon. It says: “It is also a very beautiful view from the river as you pass on a boat.”

The city is also home to the unmissable Santa Justa elevator in the downtown district. The elevator was a design by the renowned architect Gustav Eiffel and boasts stunning views of the older parts of the city.

Lisbon also has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém. The monastery was commissioned by King Manual I and showcases the ornate Manueline architectural style of the city.

The Portuguese capital also offers a vibrant nightlife. Visitors can enjoy a shopping trip to the Chiado district before enjoying a bite to eat at the Bairro Alto.

Meanwhile people wanting to enjoy a cultural getaway can enjoy a visit to the national tile museum or the coach museum. Portugal’s Fado music style is also world renowned.

The music, often a singer and a guitarist, can regularly be heard in the streets of Alfama, Mouraria or Madragoa. While the fado vadio style is often when an amateur starts and is joined in by guitar players.
