Lloyds, Halifax and Santander are closing 56 bank branches across the UK in the next three months as more customers shift to digital banking.
Lloyds Banking Group, which incorporates Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, has announced plans to close 95 of its branches in 2026 and 2027 to give customers more “flexibility” to bank wherever they need to, including through apps, online, 24/7 messaging services and community banking hubs. The group said the way customers are banking is changing, and the significant reduction in its branch network comes as it accelerates plans to cut costs and digitise services.
Under the plans, 53 Lloyds branches, 31 Halifax branches and 11 Bank of Scotland branches are due to close in total, and banking hubs will be opened in 14 new locations where customers can withdraw and deposit cash, and pay bills.

Lloyds hasn’t specified how many of its staff will be impacted by the closures, but all those who work at the affected branches will be offered a role at another branch or in another part of the business.
A spokeswoman for Lloyds said: “Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before.
“From our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service to local banking options like our community bankers, PayPoint and access to all of our Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches, we’re giving our customers the flexibility to bank wherever and whenever they need us.”
Meanwhile, Santander has also announced plans to close 44 of its UK branches this year, putting 291 jobs at risk.
The closures come as part of plans to “better serve the changing needs of its customers” after many have switched to mobile apps, online and telephone banking, while branches are being used less frequently.
Santander said the closing branches will be replaced by community bankers, operating either from a Santander Local or a banking hub, to ensure ongoing face-to-face support for customers.
The bank added that all of its current and business account holders can also bank using one of more than 11,000 Post Office branches nationwide and over 200 banking hubs.
