‘Better than St Ives’ UK beach is ‘great in winter’ | UK | Travel

People looking for a ‘lovely’ beachfront walk are spoilt for choice in Cornwall. From rugged coastlines to family-friendly bays, there’s a lot to delight nature lovers.

For a ‘superb’ winter walk, Carbis Bay Beach could be a fantastic choice. According to a reviewer, it’s even ‘better than’ nearby St Ives, another popular destination known for its stunning scenery. Found on the West Cornwall coast, a short drive from St Ives, Carbis Bay Holidays says the beach could rival most in the UK.

The website explains: “It’s fair to say that Carbis Bay Beach is one of the best beaches in the UK, and maybe even the world! Carbis Bay is a picture-perfect setting on the West Cornwall coast. Enjoying shelter from cliffs at either end of the beach, and blessed with white sands and blue waters, you’d think you were in the Caribbean.”

The description continues: “Carbis Bay has fine white and gold sands and clear blue waters. The beach is always spotlessly clean, making it a perfect location for sunbathing and relaxing.”

With 25 acres to explore, the Blue Flag beach could be an ideal choice for a day out, and it is free for all visitors. Dogs are also welcome in the winter months, as the seasonal ban runs from May 15 to September 30, according to Visit Cornwall.

TripAdvisor reviewers love Carbis Bay, awarding it a 2025 Travellers’ Choice Award and hundreds of positive reviews. One visitor commented: “A great beach to visit all year round. Super in the winter, flat and sandy and good sand for sandcastles. Wonderful beachside cafe with great staff adjoining beach.”

A second reviewer agreed: “A beautiful beach at any time of year but great in the winter to walk the dogs. Very clean and lovely to see the seals in the bay.” They added: “Our favourite beach in Cornwall.”

A fan claimed: “Better than St Ives beaches and good kayaks.” Someone else shared: “My local beach. So happy to be able to use this beach in the winter to walk my dog. This is my happy place. Lovely and clean and has parking.”

Another fan wrote: “We visited whilst walking the South West Coast Walk, and even at the end of October, it was still busy. The beach was still golden and had some great views even in the rain.”

Holidaymakers planning ahead to the summer holidays will be pleased to know the beach is just as popular with summer visitors. One such visitor said: “Lovely long sandy beach, plenty of room for school holiday crowds. Clear water, good for swimming but freezing cold even in summer. Tip, stay in for 10 mins and you acclimatise or hire a wetsuit. Great beach for water sports.”

A similar response said: “Family summer holiday. Absolutely stunning beach with turquoise blue water, family and child friendly. We walked along the coastal path from St Ives, beautiful, picturesque views.”
