A huge fire has engulfed an entire street in Yokohama, Japan, according to reports, as more than 40 fire engines and other vehicles respond. Emergency services were alerted at around 7.30pm local time on Monday after witnesses reported smoke pouring from a house followed by an explosion-like noise in the city’s Tsurumi ward.
Authorities say at least five homes have been destroyed as flames spread rapidly through the densely packed residential area, with firefighters still battling to bring the blaze under control. Police confirmed one man in his 80s suffered a leg injury and was taken to hospital. His condition has not been disclosed. The incident happened roughly 600 metres from Kikuna Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, a busy commuter rail route. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
