9 jaw-dropping photos of UK’s busiest train station’s £1.2bn transformation project | UK | News

Plans have been approved to transform the UK’s busiest train station. The project, which will cost £1.2 billion and commence in 2029, involves the creation of more shops and cafes, as well as improved passenger facilities and pedestrian and cycle paths.

London Liverpool Street Station is the busiest in the UK, welcoming almost 100 million passengers every year. The City of London has now given the green light to a project to regenerate the station, which will eventually double its capacity. An impressive 318ft tower block will be built over the main concourse, while additional ticket barriers, lifts, escalators and toilets will also be introduced.

Chris Hayward, policy chairman of the City of London Corporation, said: “This redevelopment of Liverpool Street station is a major step forward for the Square Mile. It will support the City’s dynamic business ecosystem with state-of-the-art infrastructure, create new jobs and strengthen our position as a world‑leading destination, while ensuring that residents, workers and visitors all benefit from a modern, inclusive and future‑focused transport hub.

“As competition among global cities increases, we must demonstrate our openness to new investment that will enhance our urban environment, and Liverpool Street station will now continue to do just that.”

Tom Sleigh, chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transportation Committee, added: “Everyone likes an upgrade, and this astonishing improvement to Britain’s busiest train station is just that; a major improvement by every measure. It’s a late, but very welcome Christmas present for the nation. The soaring Brick arches and bold architecture will cement Liverpool Street’s status as a modern temple to transport.”
