I visited pretty village in England dubbed ‘new Cotswolds’ – locals call it ‘a real gem’ | Travel News | Travel
Nestled in the South Downs and less than a 30-minute drive from the beach, this provincial gem is dubbed the ‘new Cotswolds’ and has played host to legendary historical figures, from Rudyard Kipling to Edward Elgar. Fittleworth in West Sussex is set in the green expanse of the South Downs National Park. After a smooth hour-and-a-half-long train ride from London Victoria, I stepped off the train at Pulborough and headed for an afternoon lunch at the famed 14th-century Swan Inn.
The Swan has hosted a range of famous clientele over the centuries. A traditional pub with wooden beams and a large brick fireplace, its 12 exclusive rooms are tastefully decorated and named after celebrated guests. J.M.W. Turner and John Constable would stay at the inn whenever passing through the area, often paying for their food and lodgings with artwork. Edward Elgar visited the Swan multiple times, and Rudyard Kipling added his name to the inn’s guest book during his three-day visit in July 1901. The menu uses high-quality seasonal ingredients, offering everything from pub classics to innovative smaller plates like artichoke and almond soup or cheddar and spinach soufflé.
One local calls The Swan “a charming place”. Another local said: “The Swan is such a lovely pub … great for a pizza on the outside patio in the summer, or a cosy wintery night inside”.
A TripAdvisor user wrote that the staff are “friendly and charismatic” and that the inn itself is “a real gem – just superb”.
Visitors can enjoy a glass of English sparkling wine at nearby Stopham vineyard, explore local foliage at Wynkcombe Arboretum, or visit 12th-century St Mary’s Church and its Victorian nave.
The community-owned Fittleworth Stores are another local highlight, consisting of a village shop, café, and post office. It carries a range of fresh produce, supporting local farmers and businesses. A local said: “Not sure what we’d do without that shop there! And everyone is so lovely”.
For those hoping to follow in the footsteps of Turner and Constable, the Fittleworth Gallery near Petworth exhibits work by artists around the South Downs, valuing both contemporary and traditional artworks unique to the region.
The South Downs has myriad scenic walking routes to explore local nature and wildlife. Explore the nearby Petworth ancient trees walk or the Devil’s Dyke history walk, which takes you to the alleged burial site of the Devil.
