Aldi will extend six stores as part of a £300million upgrade programme across its supermarket estate. The low-cost chain, which aims to open 40 new stores this year, has also earmarked a further five stores in England for upgrades, with a focus on sustainability.
Branches in Huddersfield, Liverpool, Lewes and Bebington will be extended in England. Scotland’s Stirling store will also be extended, as will Wales’ Llantrisant branch. In addition to the extensions, Aldi will introduce energy-efficient technology to stores, such as fridge doors to reduce energy use, and natural refrigerants to help cut carbon emissions. It will also update fixtures and signage and redesign store layouts, aiming to improve the customer experience.
Aldi has its eyes on growth this year, having recently announced a £370 million commitment to opening 40 new stores in 2026, which it said reflected the supermarket’s focus on strengthening its store estate.
Giles Hurley, chief executive officer, Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “As well as opening new stores, we’re also investing in existing ones to make sure everyone can get what they need from Aldi.
“By extending some stores, and by upgrading and improving others across the country, we can serve even more customers while creating even better shopping environments for our colleagues and shoppers.
“Together with our new stores, that will mean more people can access Aldi’s high-quality products at unbeatable prices.”
