Keir Starmer falls to hard-left coup – didn’t vote for this but we pay | Personal Finance | Finance

Voters don’t get a say on what’s happening now. Starmer is still in Number 10, but he’s no longer in power. The likes of Ed Miliband and Angela Rayner are calling the shots. Starmer has no political vision, he just likes the job title. He’ll endure any humiliation to keep it. So he’s submitted to a sudden and astonishingly successful hard-left coup. Labour’s left has been dreaming of this moment for decades. Now we’re there. It’s going to be a nightmare.

Until recently, it was Labour’s right that exerted control, via Morgan McSweeney. Now he’s gone, due to his links to slimy Peter Mandelson. Yesterday, our puppet PM was out boasting about his supposedly humble origins and his pride in leading “the most working-class Cabinet in the history of this country”. As if anyone cares while the economy sinks and living standards slide.

Labour doesn’t care about that. It’s too busy chasing daft ideas like votes for 16-year-olds, courtesy of Angela Rayner, and a fresh drive for more union power.

Did you vote for class war? I don’t remember Labour promising that in the 2024 election, but that’s what Marxist fantasist Miliband is now openly calling for. That’s on top of the economic war he’s launched through his reckless net zero crusade.

Yesterday he laid out a shopping list of hard-left demands, most of which will add costs, kill growth and deepen the chaos. And yes, we will all pay for it.

The public did get a chance to vote for Miliband once, when he led Labour in the 2015 general election. He was annihilated. This time, we’re not getting a vote. This is a hostile government takeover.

McSweeney was the last line of defence against the hard-left lunatics. Now they’re roaming free. Andy Burnham is already piling in with his own demands, from abolishing the House of Lords to giving local authorities powers to seize private homes.

The leftward lurch is happening right across government. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is sinking schools reforms that improved standards under both Conservative and Labour governments. Her aim is simple: restore union power, whatever the cost to pupils.

The revolution has reached the Treasury too. Reeves didn’t even write her own Budget, handing that task to hard-left tax obsessive Torsten Bell, who fits perfectly into the new regime and no doubt dreams of storming and swearing his way into Number 11. If that happens, the tax raids will only intensify.

The takeover is happening at every level, as the left captures our institutions. Starmer has parachuted in a new Cabinet Secretary to save his skin: Dame Antonia Romeo, a super-woke apparatchik best known as the civil service’s “gender inclusion champion”.

Incredibly, Starmer claims to admire her handling of the small boats crisis. If her job was to keep the boats coming, she’s done a fine job of it.

She replaces Sir Chris Wormald, appointed just a year ago, who leaves with a £250,000 taxpayer-funded payoff. Failure, as ever in Whitehall, comes with a handsome reward. And once again, you foot the bill.

Labour has now fallen to the left. Just 33.7% of voters backed the party in 2024. They thought they were voting for a cautious and sensible moderate, only to end up with the most extreme left-wing government in British history. And the bills are only just starting to land.
