The gloomy British weather has us dreaming of a sun-soaked getaway, and there’s one European escape that is one of the hottest destinations to visit in March, with balmy 21C weather.

During this time of year, it’s easy to assume we need to pay the premium and board a long-haul flight to a tropical island in the hope of basking in some blistering heat. Yet, there are some balmy European places that offer inviting rays of sunshine during the colder UK months, including the beautiful city of Seville in Spain. (We also have a guide to all the hot and sunny destinations each month if you need more inspiration).

Less than three hours from the UK, the capital of Andalusia boasts charming narrow streets lined with orange trees, stunning architecture with Moorish influence and iconic landmarks that are as striking in person as they are in pictures. Seville is considered one of Europe’s sunniest cities, with year-round sunshine.

There’s plenty to see and do during a getaway to Seville, but its architecture is a standout quality. One of its most famous is the Alcázar of Seville, the city’s Royal Palace, with its Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque styles, which were notably featured in Game of Thrones.

Another key attraction is the Catedral de Sevilla, one of the largest cathedrals in the world, with a royal chapel and the Giralda tower, offering panoramic views over the colourful city. Another striking landmark is the Setas de Sevilla, also known as the ‘Mushrooms of Seville’, a huge wooden structure with a rooftop walkway that is a favourite among visitors to capture the Seville sunset.

Elsewhere in the sunny city, there is Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter with flower-filled streets and yellow buildings, and Seville’s famed park, Parque de María Luisa, which stretches along the tranquil Guadalquivir River. One of the city’s most recognisable areas is the famed square in Maria Luisa park, Plaza de España, featuring a moat with four bridges that represent the ancient kingdoms of Spain, along with 52 tiled benches that resemble different Spanish provinces.

A traveller, who visited Plaza de España last month, shared on TripAdvisor: “This is a beautiful place, the buildings are immense, the history amazing, and the atmosphere is superb. I visited twice on our recent trip once early morning and I was the only person and once on a sunny afternoon with my wife. The difference in feelings was great, but both were unforgettable experiences. A must when visiting Seville.”

It’s easy to spend time wandering around the beautiful city, with its famed architecture and history that flows into its vibrant, celebrated culture. There are also traditional Flamenco shows to watch and a vibrant nightlife, with inviting restaurants offering the very best of Spain’s flavours with their renowned tapas, and bars to sample their signature orange wine.

While the summer months can be scorching, especially when exploring the city, a visit during the first few months of the year with a warming 21C, make it an ideal winter escape. Plus, direct flights from London airports start from as little as £20, what’s not to love?
