One little village in Spain is 100 times prettier than British holiday hotspot, Benidorm, and has barely any tourists. Brits are renowned for loving getaways to Benidorm even though it’s not the prettiest place. But this pretty village is just a 2-and-a-half-hour drive from the popular location, meaning Brits can do both.

Alpuente sits at the foot of the Serranía del Turia mountains, just off the tourist trail. The Spanish village is located on in the province of Valencia and is ideal for those looking to explore local history, visit vineyards or venture through nature on hiking trails.

The underrated village, with a population of approximately 700 inhabitants, is ideal for a quick getaway, quieter and more secluded than areas like Benidorm.

Tourists can enjoy the dramatic landscapes surrounding the area, reportedly ideal for hiking and mountain biking.

The fortress, which dates back to Arab rule in the 10th century, now stands in ruins which tourists can visit. The area is rich in Medieval and archaeological history, with the Alpuente’s Paleontological Museum displaying dinosaur footprints and fossil remains.

Visitors can also go and see the village’s Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad (Church of Our Lady of Mercy), a gothic Catholic church dating back to the second half of the 14th century.

The little village is also home to authentic Spanish restaurants like La Cueva Restaurante Alpuente and Restaurante Victoria.

While there are no hotels in the town area, visitors can stay in a selection of Casa Rurals which are close by or can visit on a day trip from the coast.

In May last year the village also opened its arms to new residents, with its surplus of jab openings and vacant homes. With houses starting at €20,000 (£17,363), Alpuente ranks among Spain’s most affordable places where owning a home is still within reach.

Visitors of Alpuente can also easily drive to Valencia in approximately an hour. Valencia offers a range of activities for tourists, with a beach and bustling centre.

If tourists are looking for a change from the serene atmosphere of Alpuente, Valencia offers a variety of rooftop bars and nightclubs.

The city also features iconic spots like the City of Arts and Sciences museum and the Valencia Cathedral.

Valencia, a tourist hotspot, is also home to a number of hotels and staycation spots for those looking to visit Alpuente from somewhere nearby.
