I watched masterpiece Netflix drama that has a 100% review score | Films | Entertainment

Watching a period drama is one of my favourite kinds of TV viewing, especially while the nights still draw in early – and the weather is chilly or wet. It seems like really watchable period dramas are few and far between, though, so I was excited to find one I’d not yet seen – and have now binge-watched two series.

It seems I’m not alone in being a huge fan of Netflix drama, The Law According to Lidia Poët, as the series has a 100% audience score on trusty Rotten Tomatoes. Season 1 was so addictive and Season 2, equally impressive, it’s the costumes, the characters, the story (based on truth), along with the stunning Italian scenes that make this drama so good. Yes, you need subtitles (unless you are Italian or fluent in the beautiful language), but I love picking up a few new words in another language while I watch – and I especially love Italian dramas.

Lead actress Matilda De Angelis, who plays Lidia Poët in this Netflix show, is absolutely wonderful in her role; she’s stunning, unconventional, brave, intelligent, yet caring of her legal clients.

One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes summed it up: “There sure are some good-looking people in Italy where this series was made.

“Eponymous Lidia Poet played by Matilda De Angelis – bella donna!

“And to be an equal opportunity reviewer, Lidia’s bohemian sometimes boyfriend played by Dario Aita, and ‘also starring’ Eduardo Scarpetta who plays Jacopo Barberis – these two fellows are no slouches when it comes to looks either.

“Lidia battles for the right to practice law, solves whodunits, helps with her niece’s troubled love life, and is supportive of all who she crosses paths with (except the bad people).

“Go Lidia – and one last thing: period atmosphere, settings, and costumes all exquisitely done.”

The drama, set in late 19th-century Turin (Torino in Italy), shows us what it was like as a woman in that century, especially a woman braving a path that goes against the traditions of that time.

Beautiful and courageous Lidia Poët fights against everything and everyone in her way to be enrolled in the official register of lawyers – and she was the first female to be accepted, but it wasn’t easy.

Based on a true story of the real Lidia Poët, who fought against a male-dominated legal system in Italy to become the country’s first modern female lawyer, this story will have you captivated.

Along the way, she has several love affairs, which of course only cause the viewer to get even more hooked on the series, as personal dramas play out along with murders, visits to legal clients in prison – and a look at the beautiful city the series is filmed in.

I’ve definitely added Turin in Italy to my places to go list after watching The Law According to Lidia Poët, it looks amazing – and happens to be where my favourite coffee, Lavazza, is roasted.

I always love the costumes in period dramas, but seeing what Italians wore in the 1800s is fascinating and interesting when compared to British historical series, such as Poldark.

I would say The Law According to Lidia Poët is high on my list of favourites, along with Cornish-inspired period drama Poldark – and tuning into Season 2 of the Italian costume drama was equally enthralling.

So I’m thrilled to see that a third series of The Law According to Lidia Poët is coming to our screens soon, I can’t wait. For me, it’s the perfect mix of allure, mystery, romance, history and feminism in Italy during the late 19th-century.
