A 27-year-old Delhi Police SWAT commando, four months pregnant, has died after her husband allegedly bludgeoned her with a dumbbell during a violent domestic dispute. Kajal Chaudhary, who joined the force in 2022 and was serving with the Special Cell, was attacked on January 22 at her home in Mohan Garden, West Delhi.

She succumbed to severe head injuries on January 27 at a hospital in Ghaziabad after fighting for her life for five days. Her husband, Ankur, a clerk with the Ministry of Defence, has been arrested and charged with murder. Police say the assault began after repeated arguments over money and household expenses. Kajal’s brother Nikhil, a constable at Parliament Street police station, said he was on the phone with her when the attack began.

“He called me and said, ‘Make your sister understand’. I advised him to calm down and immediately called my sister,” Nikhil said, according to PTI.

“She was sharing her ordeal when he snatched the phone. He told me, ‘Record this call, it will be used as evidence. I am killing your sister. Police can do nothing.’ Then I heard her screams,” he added.

“Minutes later, Ankur phoned again and said, ‘She has died. Come to the hospital.'”

Relatives claim Kajal was subjected to constant dowry demands and abuse by her husband’s family. Her father, Rakesh, said: “We gave them a Bullet bike, gold jewellery and cash at the wedding, but they said our son would have got a car had he married someone else. Even after my daughter arranged a car, they continued to harass her.”

Kajal’s mother added that the family spent nearly ₹20 lakh (£15,900) on the marriage and accused Ankur of stealing ₹5 lakh (£4,000).

“Kajal endured a lot of suffering. Justice is what I seek. He is a monster,” she said.

According to local media, Nikhil recalled that Ankur had assaulted Kajal months earlier but promised never to repeat it. He alleged she was forced to cook and clean even while pregnant and returning from duty.

Police confirmed the couple had taken loans and often argued over finances. A Delhi Police officer said: “On January 22, Ankur allegedly attacked Kajal with a dumbbell after first banging her head against a door frame.”

The couple’s one-and-a-half-year-old son is now being cared for by Kajal’s maternal family, with Nikhil telling local media: “We have opted to raise her son alone. When he is old enough to comprehend such things, we will let him know.”
