‘Best war movie of all time’ on Netflix – 94% on Rotten Tomatoes | Films | Entertainment
Dive into the gritty world of ‘Full Metal Jacket,’ where filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s lens captures the haunting transformation of men into soldiers, leaving innocence behind. With a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been dubbed one of Netflix’s best war films.
Kubrick’s Vietnam War tale follows Private “Joker” Davis (Matthew Modine), quickly nicknamed by his foul-mouthed drill sergeant (R. Lee Ermey), and the hapless Private Lawrence (Vincent D’Onofrio), called “Gomer Pyle,” as they’re transformed from civilians into hardened soldiers, capturing innocence lost and the evolution from recruit to killer.
Jay Scott, a film critic, says: “Full Metal Jacket is violent, caustic, ironic, and cold, an amoral object formed from a camera gliding majestically across slow-motion carnage while refusing to blink an eye or shed a tear.”
“Full Metal Jacket,” Kubrick’s harrowing, beautiful, and characteristically eccentric new film about Vietnam, is going to puzzle, anger, and (I hope) fascinate audiences as much as any film he has made to date.” Another added.
An audience reviewer from Rotten Tomatoes said: “Not an easy watch, from the tragic story of Leonard (Pyle) to the ending where Joker battles his internal conflicts and has to make a decision whether to side with peace or war. This film really does portray the brutal reality of war in all forms, from the transformation of men from seemingly innocent beings to war ready killing machines.
“The splitting of the film in two parts pushes the system of training straight to war, especially in the case of the Vietnam War, to the viewer. Giving you no chance to relax before being plunged straight into the battlefield. Again not an easy watch in the slightest but one you have to see.”
“In my opinion, it’s the best movie I have ever seen so far in my life. Its ability to portray the nature of war is unparalleled by anything I have ever seen. Brutal, visceral, and raw, this movie has all the components necessary for a spectacular war epic,” added another reviewer.
