With brighter, longer days just around the corner and the February school half-term approaching, now might be the ideal time to organise a day out. For families seeking child-friendly destinations close to London, Shere and Guildford could be ‘great’ options.
A travel enthusiast who explored the ‘postcard’ village and the neighbouring market town has shared their itinerary – and social media users loved the idea. Taking to TikTok as @Uktravel, the travel blogger revealed how they spent a lovely day out in Surrey, reports MyLondon.
The blogger said: “This is one of my favourite day trip ideas from London. You get to see a picture-perfect little village, have some food in a cosy cafe, wander around, and then hop on a bus or train to explore a nearby town with pubs, restaurants, and even a castle.”
In the caption, the travel lover explained: “I took the train from London Waterloo to Gomshall (about 1h 10m), then walked around 20 minutes to reach Shere village. That was my first stop; it’s such a charming place. I strolled by the stream, saw some horses, and then stopped at a café called The Dabbling Duck for lunch, which was so delicious.
“After exploring the village, we hopped on a 30-minute local bus from the village centre and headed to Guildford. I was honestly amazed by how beautiful this town is. We wandered by the castle and along the River Wey. My favourite spot was a riverside pub called The Weyside, where we sat by the water with drinks and just relaxed.”

The post concluded: “It felt like the perfect mix: a village and a town in one trip. Such a nice way to spend the weekend and feel like you’ve made the most of it.” Responding to the video, which gained thousands of likes, someone shared: “Have done that! So lovely.” Someone else praised: “Good food and food views,” and a viewer said: “So beautiful.”
According to Visit Surrey, Shere is a ‘beautiful, quintessential English village’. The tourism website explains: “The village offers visitors charming buildings, a stream with ducks, a small museum, a tearoom, two pubs, The White Horse and The William Bray as well as St James Church a 12th century church.
“There are also some fantastic examples of Lutyens architecture here, too – quite romantic really. The parish of Shere includes Gomshall, Peaslake, Holmbury St Mary, Shere and part of Abinger Hammer and nestled firmly in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”
