Nationwide issues statement over bonus payments into customer accounts | Personal Finance | Finance
Nationwide Building Society has issued a statement about the upcoming round of its Fairer Share Payment. Customers have received several payments through the scheme in recent years. In 2025, more than four million customers received an £100 bonus payment thanks to the scheme.
The Fairer Share Payment is where Nationwide shares out its profits with its members. For last year’s payment, you needed to have a qualifying current account with the provider, as well as either a qualifying savings account or a qualifying mortgage.
Bonus payments as part of the scheme were also issued in 2023 and in 2024, with an £100 payment issued each time, meaning some loyal customers have pocketed a total of £300. As the bonus cash has become a bit of a yearly staple, members may ask if another round will be paid this year.
Guidance on the Nationwide website about the scheme explains: “We’d like to make Fairer Share Payments every year, but it depends on how we perform financially. For any future payments, we may change the eligibility criteria and the amount we pay.”
Nationwide was asked for an update on whether or not there will be a 2026 edition of the payment scheme. A spokesperson said: “Nationwide’s board will decide on a Fairer Share Payment for 2026 and it will depend on our financial performance.
“That assessment will be made after our financial year end, with the eligibility criteria for this year being agreed then too. The decision will be announced as part of our full year results in May.”
Other Nationwide bonuses
This is separate from the the Big Nationwide Thank You, a one-off payment of £50 that went out to some 12 million members back in 2024. The payments went out as a gesture of thanks after Nationwide successfully took on Virgin Money.
There was a recent deadline concerning this payout scheme though. If you were issued a cheque in the post for your £50, this had to be cashed in by January 1, 2026.
Customers may also be able to get their hands on some Nationwide bonus cash through the group’s on-going switch offer. Nationwide will currently pay you £175 to move over your current account from a non-Nationwide account to a new or existing FlexDirect, FlexAccount or FlexPlus account.
Once you have met all the qualifying criteria, Nationwide will pay the amount into the account you have switched to within 10 days. You will need to have the account open to receive the payment. The payment will show on your statement as ‘Switching Offer’.
