As the UK heads into late winter, many of us start craving an escape from the dreary weather, and it turns out there is an incredible place just a short trip from the British mainland. The Isles of Scilly are a group of five tropical islands that look more Mediterranean than British despite being part of England

This means you do not need a passport to visit, and it takes just under two hours to get to these breathtaking islands from London. They are only 28 miles from Cornwall, but are known for their pale sandy beaches and beautiful coastal wildflowers that last ages thanks to the warm climate. Yaya, a travel expert and founder of Hand Luggage Only, has stated that the Isles of Scilly are her “absolute favourite” English islands to visit.

She said: “This small group of islands is a heavenly little place to explore. blessed with pristine waters, a good dose of sunshine and a proper charming landscape that will make you want to stay forever.”

The total population of all the islands is only 2,300, with most people living on St Mary island, but there are also small communities on the other islands of Tresco, St Martin’s, St Agnes and Bryher.

Every island has its own boat service, and getting between them is very easy, so you can visit multiple destinations in just one day. It is the perfect place to relax on almost-empty beaches, where you can swim, picnic, and enjoy all the beach activities you like.

If you’re feeling adventurous, St Martin’s is known for its grey seal population, where you can go snorkelling with them in their natural environment and there are also shipwrecks visible beneath the water.

These islands are known for their exotic plants, and you should also take time to visit Tresco Abbey Garden, a former monastery that has been transformed into a beautiful garden home to thousands of plants from around the world.

On St Martin’s, you can visit the vineyard for a wine tasting experience while enjoying stunning cliffside views across the Eastern Isles.

St Mary’s is also home to a riding centre, and one fun activity is riding horses along the coast with the help of instructors.

There are also plenty of water sports available around the islands, including paddle boarding and windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and taking wildlife tours to see seabirds.

However, it is highly recommended to go stargazing at least once, as the night sky looks incredible thanks to the low light pollution.

The Isles of Scilly are one of the most unique places to visit in the UK, and is the perfect place for anyone dreaming of escaping the frosty weather this winter.
