Roy Keane blasts ‘silly’ Michael Carrick idea after Man Utd win at Arsenal | Football | Sport

Roy Keane has insisted he remains unconvinced that Michael Carrick should be handed the permanent Manchester United manager’s role, despite a remarkable 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Sunday. Keane heaped praise on his former club and on Carrick, who has secured both matches since stepping in for Ruben Amorim, alongside Darren Fletcher as interim boss, including a derby triumph against Man City.

The ex-club captain was questioned by Micah Richards on Sky Sports immediately after the final whistle about whether Carrick is the right man for United. “The job? No, you’re being silly now,” Keane responded to a question from Richards. “You serious? He’s had two great performances, but anybody can win two games. It’s what he does at the end of the season.”

“Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the man for the job. Absolutely not, I still think they need a bigger and better manager, but he’s got the opportunity, what a chance for him and, you know what, he’s taken it, so, fair play to him.”

Discussing the overall display, Keane continued: “It will give them belief of getting into that top four. This is a brilliant goal, by the way. Lovely play by Bruno (Fernandes) and (Kobbie) Mainoo, and that strike (from Cunha), what a strike.

“Look at Bruno here, does really well, little give and go, and Cunha, as soon as it leaves his foot… and the keeper, who is a very, very good keeper.

“They definitely played with a bit more freedom going forward, they came to win the game, they weren’t sitting at the back, you’d think United were thinking we’ll take the draw, 2-2, we’d still be sitting here going, ‘great result for United’.

“But to get that momentum and score a brilliant goal from someone off the bench, just like they did last week shows a good attitude, a good mindset, they’ll be growing in confidence and the attacking players they are playing with a lot more freedom.”
