The five largest megacities in the world have a combined population of almost 150 million people, roughly equal to Russia’s total population. A megacity is a massive urban area with over 10 million people. 

They are defined by population size rather than specific borders, encompassing the city and its surrounding suburbs. The world had 32 according to EU Global Human Settlement Layer in 2024, with a good percentage of these urban agglomerations in China and India. Geographical made a list of the top 10 megacities in the world, with cities in Brazil, Bangladesh, and Japan. The rest of the top 10 is made up by Mexico City in Mexico, Cairo in Egypt, Beijing in China, Mumbai in India, and Osaka in Japan.

Delhi’s urban agglomeration, which includes the satellite cities Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida and YEIDA city, has an estimated population of over 32.9 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in India.
