‘He will be impeached’ Greenland mocks Donald Trump over invasion threat | World | News

President Donald Trump risks being “impeached” or “kicked out” if he continues on his mission to acquire Greenland. A bipartisan delegation from the US Congress arrived in Copenhagen on Friday to underline support for Denmark and Greenland following threats by US President Donald Trump to seize the Arctic island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

The two-day visit coincides with a broader European demonstration of support, including a military reconnaissance mission over Greenland. The group of 11 lawmakers is due to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen as well as Greenland’s leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen. And now a top union rep in Greenland has warned that “Congress” will have to “step up” and save their “own democracy” if Trump takes the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

“If he does it, he’ll get impeached or kicked out. If people in Congress want to save their own democracy, they have to step up,” said the union rep, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The rep said: “Congress would never approve of a military action in Greenland. It’s just one idiot speaking.”

Trump is attempting to justify taking control of the island due to its strategic location, abundant mineral resources, and increasing Russian and Chinese military activity in the region.

This claim has been opposed by many, including Barack Obama’s former assistant secretary of state Frank Rose, the last US official to negotiate a defence agreement with Denmark and the Greenland Home Rule administration.

President Trump has suggested the United States could withdraw from NATO if other members of the military alliance do not support his efforts to take control of Greenland.

The US president was asked today, Friday, January 16, whether he would consider leaving the alliance if fellow members refused to back his push to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

He replied: “We’re going to see. NATO has been dealing with us on Greenland. We need Greenland for national security very badly. If we don’t have it we have a very big hole in terms of national security, especially in terms of the Golden Dome.”

Large-scale demonstrations are set to take place across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday in opposition to Donald Trump’s territorial ambitions.

Thousands of people have indicated on social media that they plan to join the protests, which are being organised by Greenlandic groups in Nuuk as well as in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and Odense.
