Marks & Spencer (M&S) has revealed the 500 locations where it wants to open brand new, refurbished stores. The British supermarket is planning a considerable expansion in the UK, particularly when it comes to its food offering. It hopes to double the size of its food business, with thousands of new jobs potentially created as a result. There are currently 330 M&S stores dotted around the country.

The high-end supermarket aims to increase that to have 180 mixed stores and 420 dedicated food shops within the next few years. M&S’s ambitious new expansion plans are already taking effect, as the supermarket gears up to renovate 20 stores by April, creating 800 new jobs. Ahead of the move, it has revealed a list of 500 locations where it wishes to open, aiming to bring more Brits within a short distance of a store. 

“The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth,” said M&S Managing Director Alex Freudmann.

As part of its planned expansion, the company wants to target areas that are currently without a Marks & Spencer store. They highlighted Hove, Marlborough and Wallingford as examples. 

The new, larger layout features wider aisles for bigger trolleys and larger car parks for more families. The move could see a huge number of Brits could soon be closer to an M&S.
