Scottish city beats Edinburgh as Scotland’s ‘best’ for January break | UK | Travel
A Scottish city has been crowned the “best place to visit” in the country this winter. With the festive season just gone, the chilliest months are still continuing.
Yet, the onset of winter presents an ideal opportunity for a UK getaway.
UK Hidden Gems’s list of the “10 best places to visit in Scotland in December” features just one city — Aberdeen, which claimed the top spot.
Dubbed the Granite City, Aberdeen is celebrated for its annual Christmas Village, but there is still plenty to do in January. The first month of the year can be the perfect chance to explore the city.
UK Hidden Gems commented: “Aberdeen is perfect for nature lovers, offering easy access to the breathtaking Cairngorms National Park and the famous Dolphin Spotting tours at the harbour. History buffs will love exploring its ancient castles, like Dunnottar Castle, perched dramatically on cliffs overlooking the sea.
“The city also has a vibrant arts scene, with galleries, festivals, and live music. Whether you’re wandering through the historic Old Aberdeen or enjoying a meal of fresh, locally caught seafood, Aberdeen offers a mix of adventure, culture, and tranquillity that feels like stepping into a Scottish fairytale.”
Coming in at second place for Scotland’s finest December destinations, according to UK Hidden Gems, was Fort William. Commonly known as the gateway to Ben Nevis, this Highland town sits picturesquely on the banks of Loch Linnhe.
But again, Fort William proves a perfect getaway for January too. The experts noted: “The town itself has a cosy atmosphere, with traditional pubs, local shops, and plenty of spots to try delicious Scottish dishes.
“Whether you’re exploring Glen Nevis, taking in the majestic waterfalls, or simply soaking up the peaceful beauty of the Highlands, Fort William is a must-visit destination that feels like a gateway to another world.”
Additionally, the experts positioned Cairngorms National Park at number three. As Britain’s largest national park, the Cairngorms boasts an extensive array of picturesque walking routes ideal for crisp winter rambles.
Completing the top five are the Isle of Skye and Loch Ness, claiming fourth and fifth positions respectively. UK Hidden Gems lauded the former for its “dramatic landscapes” and “peaceful atmosphere”, whilst highlighting Loch Ness for its “mysterious beauty”.
