France to deploy 90,000 police officers ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations | World | News

France is set to deploy 90,000 police officers across the country tonight as it attempts to crack down on rioters ruining New Year’s Eve celebrations. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the move as authorities anticipate violence tonight in Paris and elsewhere. Officers and gendarmes will be sent in to address public order issues, such as vehicle fires and attacks on emergency services.

In Paris and its surrounding suburbs, roughly 10,000 personnel will be on patrol, including firefighters from the Paris Fire Brigade (BSPP), military personnel from Opération Sentinelle, and paramedics. Mr Nuñez stressed the importance of keeping large crowds safe and displaying “fermeté et autorité”, meaning firmness and authority, in the face of any disturbances.

He told France Inter: “On New Year’s Eve, there are many people who go out into the streets to celebrate the passage to the New Year. So we have to make all these people safe.

“And then there is the traditional end-of-year urban violence that takes place in certain neighbourhoods, where there are mortars thrown at the police.”

This action is typical of French authorities on New Year’s Eve, as there are often reports of violence and rioting, particularly in urban centres.

However, this year the traditional concert on the Champs-Élysées has been cancelled due to the risks posed by crowd surges.

Where events do go ahead, for example, fireworks displays, there will be increased crowd management measures, such as traffic restrictions and limits on alcohol consumption.

Celebrations have also been cancelled elsewhere across the globe. In America, some unofficial events in Los Angeles were cancelled after the FBI uncovered plans for a bombing, leading to the arrest of four people.

First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli said surveillance footage showed the suspects trying to assemble a bomb.

Sydney, Australia has also cancelled the fireworks display on Bondi Beach following the shooting that left 15 people dead and 40 injured.
