‘The greatest movie ever made’ is leaving Netflix soon | Films | Entertainment

Netflix viewers are being urged to watch just one of its many thriller titles before it leaves the streaming service in the New Year.

The 1975 thriller is based on the novel of the same name and it was the first major motion picture to be shot at sea.

Regarded as a turning point in motion picture history, Jaws became a summer blockbuster and won several awards, becoming the highest-grossing film in history until the release of Star Wars two years later.

Quentin Tarantino, one of the most influential and successful filmmakers of his time, hailed the film “the greatest movie ever made”.

During an appearance on the ReelBend podcast in 2022, he expanded: “Maybe not the greatest film. But it’s the greatest movie ever made…as far as a movie, there’s no making it better than Jaws. There’s no ‘better’ than Jaws. It is the best movie ever made.”

Jaws leaves Netflix on January 2, so fans only have a matter of days to watch it before it disappears.

The film stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody as he hunts a man-eating great white shark with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw).

Before production began, Spielberg started to get cold feet, in fear of becoming typecast as the “truck and shark director”.

However, he was persuaded to pursue the project, which would go on to make him one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema.

Fans took to IMDb reviews over the years to share their thoughts on the film, branding it “the epitome of suspense”.

Amthermandes said: “No movie can beat the brilliance of Jaws within the world of suspense and horror. Some movies have come close, others have even matched it and gone on as legends themselves. But none have, or ever will, surpass this Spielberg masterpiece.

“Everything about this movie is flawless. It’s most famous for its editing and direction. There is nothing to nitpick. Just go see it, and I will withhold judgement if for some reason you dislike it in any way.”

Idiot-Deluxe called it “timeless cinema”, adding: “It’s true, few movies tell a story better and in a more compelling way than JAWS – the original summer blockbuster, which was a worldwide smash-hit or “phenomenon” upon its initial release in May of 1975.

“I can firmly attest to its extreme longevity and at this point it would seem JAWS’ ability to entertain me, myself and the masses is indefatigable. In other words: JAWS IS ETERNAL. An ageless, universally beloved masterpiece and due to the film’s great originality, it has always been easy for me to admire it.”
